our dogs are rescues. We live on farm. Wife likes little dogs and I prefer BIG. I had rescued Black Great Dane male puppy someone abandoned near freeway in 1992-- Orpheus. He lived a little over 8 years. then in 2004 I adopted from shelter a brown Great Dane male with erlichea disease/anemia . owner was 80 couldnt afford to care for him. named him Spike and nursed him back to health, great playful dog. Someone stole him 2 years later.
Right now I have red chow/sharpei Gimli, black Lab/Great Dane mix Strider, Cane Corso named Corso, pit bull named Tatsu Willow. also 5 toy dogs. Our Golden Retriever Legolas passed New Years Eve. Coyotes killed our rottweiler mix Mimsy beginning of November. Our 16 year old doxy mix had advanced lymphoma so the vet said it was time to let him go this may. very hard.
2 other of our old dogs passed earlier in 2013: our husky who was around 15-16, don't know for sure cos he was already adult when he showed up on our farm and asked to live with us. Clara the little black lab came from the shelter and the shelter almost always writes down the adult dogs' ages as 2 years old on adoption cards. We adopted her in 2000 so she was at least 15. My laptop with all their digital photos crashed so I'm trying to restore it. I have 3 cats right now too but they are shy since we got the mastiff and pit bull.
a reakly warm heart, I can say I like it Yeah I know it what it means to have a dog which haven't many time

It is hard on you when the dogs are sick and must be put to sleep for their own good. My wife and I took our 15 almost 16 year dachshund-mix to be put down in May because lymphoma cancer had spread throughout his body in only 3 months!! we were both crying as we held him before the doctor gave him the shot, and then as we stayed afterwards to say goodbye. even now I am sad.
the little black pug Bug, we think he had been abused by his original owner before Animal Control found him wandering on the street, because he is afraid of men, afraid when anyone raises their arm, like he thinks you are going to hit him, afraid of loud noises.
he loves to sit snuggled on the couch next to my wife, no talking, with her petting him, and him whirling around to get every side of himself pet. he was afraid of our other dogs at first but gradually he became friends with the other small dogs we have, starting with our 14-yr-old pekinese. He is still afraid of men and loud noises or quick movements by people or large dogs and we adopted in at the beginning of March . It takes a long time to learn to trust and not be afraid.
I know my Great Dane/Lab mix at 9 years old won't live much longer --since large dogs have shorter lives. He is very big, about 130 lbs -- I hope he dies a natural peaceful death, and that I don't have to take him to the vet to be euthanized
Have you posted photos of your present dog? I will have to search them out. I plan to post photos of my other dogs once I get my laptop repaired. It has all my photos stored and it crashed 3 wks ago. It is a 2012 Macbook Air I bought February 2013 and this is the third time that it has crashed. My son is taking it to an apple genius store near where he works. There are no apple stores or repair shops within 160 miles of where I live and their phone support is terrible.
I also hope for good health and a long life, this breed will be usually 12 years old, he will in a few days 3 years old.
I understand your feeling really good, I know how hard it is to say goodbye to a dog which must taken over to the "rainbow-side", that's how the welfare call it when a sweet dog dies. I love the name "rainbow-side" 'cause it say's how beautiful this side could be. Myold dogwas allowed tobe crematedandhewill always be withme, this is the was I show him that not only he was all his life there for me...
I know the problem very well, with the service stores. That's sucks ^^'
I tried to post comments on both photos but either dA wasn't working right or my internet wasn't. Anyway, Rocky was and Fin is beautiful. I wish all animals had a good life on earth. We try hard to give our pets a happy one, safe until they cross that Rainbow. hope all is well with you. Dave
